Trabajo de gradoEl centro cultural hace parte de la propuesta de punto de encuentro de las comunidades residentes y flotantes del sector de la Jiménez, donde la gente se reúne para conservar tradiciones y desarrollar actividades culturales que incluyen la participación de toda la familia y de visitantes. La estructura del centro cultural puede variar según el caso. Forest landscape restoration in the drylands of Latin America

Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) involves the ecological restoration of degraded forest landscapes, with the aim of benefiting both biodiversity and human well-being. We first identify four fundamental principles of FLR, based on previous definitions. We then critically evaluate the application of these principles in practice, based on the experience gained during an international, collaborative research project conducted in six dry forest landscapes of Latin America. Research highlighted the potential for FLR; tree species of high socioeconomic value were identified in all study areas, and strong dependence of local communities on forest resources was widely encountered, particularly for fuelwood. We demonstrated that FLR can be achieved through both passive and active restoration approaches, and can be cost-effective if the increased provision of ecosystem services is taken into account. These results therefore highlight the potential for FLR, and the positive contribution that it could make to sustainable development. However, we also encountered a number of challenges to FLR implementation, including the difficulty of achieving strong engagement in FLR activities among local stakeholders, lack of capacity for community-led initiatives, and the lack of an appropriate institutional and regulatory environment to support restoration activities. Successful implementation of FLR will require new collaborative alliances among stakeholders, empowerment and capacity building of local communities to enable them to fully engage with restoration activities, and an enabling public policy context to enable local people to be active participants in the decision making process. © 2012 by the author(s). Currents of Progress, Toy Store for Tourists: Nineteenth-Century Mexican Liberals View the Niagara Falls

The essay addresses the depiction of the Niagara Falls as an ambivalent symbol of progress in nineteenth-century Mexican travel accounts of the United States. At that time, various Mexican intellectuals spent some time in the USA. In diaries and travelogues, some of them articulated their views of their host country but also reflected on their own society through the contrast with their northern neighbor. The Mexican visitors expressed a particular fascination with signs of modernity in the United States. Interestingly, such signifiers included not only political and social institutions and economic and industrial advancements, but also the Niagara Falls as a site of both natural and technological wonders. Examining the depiction of the Falls in major nineteenth-century Mexican travelogues of the United States, the essay illuminates some of the metaphorical “uses of nature” for articulating socio-political ideas as well as experiences of mobility

Las plantas medicinales de la organización de parteras y médicos indígenas tradicionales de Ixhuatlancillo, Veracruz, México y su significancia cultural

Se registró la significancia cultural de las especies medicinales utilizadas por la Organización de Parteras y Médicos Indígenas Tradicionales "Nahuatlxihuilt" para la atención primaria de la salud, mediante el enfoque cuantitativo de la etnobotánica. Se utilizaron herramientas participativas, y se determinaron dos índices etnobotánicos: el de fidelidad de Friedman et al. (1986), que incluye el valor de uso, el rango de prioridad (ROP) y el rango de popularidad (RPL) y el índice de valor de uso de Gómez- Beloz (2002) para las partes de las plantas utilizadas. Las familias mejor representadas fueron: Compositae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae y Solanaceae y que los géneros más importantes fueron Amaranthus, Plantago, Piper, Smilax y Urtica con dos especies cada uno. La mayor signifi cancia cultural fue: Cestrum nocturnum L., Chenopodium ambroisoides L., Chenopodium graveolens L., Urtica mexicana Liebm, U. urens Liebm y Lepidium virginicum L. (r = 0.95) (ROP = 100 y 90.9) y el índice de valor de uso para las partes de las plantas fue para las hojas (35.32) siendo las especies: Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, Oncimun selloi Benth., Salvia polystachya J.G. Ortega, Psidium guajava L., Plantago lanceolata L., Plantago major L., Plantago australis L., Polygonum acuminatum Kunth, Ruta graveolens L., Sambucus nigra var. canadensis (L.) Bolli, Taraxacum offi cinale G.H. Weber ex Wigg., Tithonia tubiformis (Jacq.) Cass., Urtica chamaedryoides Pursh y los géneros Ageratina y Ageratum, las mejor representadas. De esta forma, se concluye con el análisis de la información sobre las especies propias del grupo participante y su importancia cultural lo cual fortalecen el proceso actual y dinámico de la medicina tradicional en la zona centro del estado de Veracruz

Determinants and consequences of internal and international migration

This paper analyzes the current migration in rural population in the south of Veracruz state (Mexico). We identify three different spaces of migration, traditional markets, the northern border and the United States. Applying a multinomial logistic model and taking into account individual, family, and local characteristics of the migrants, we find different determinants in each space. These determinants are related to the objectives, needs and means of the migrants and their families.
